Enhancing Literacy and Numeracy Beyond the Classroom
"Basics Better Ltd" specialises in professional development for teachers, focusing on structured literacy and numeracy. Our method goes beyond traditional classrooms, assisting teachers to introduce real-world challenges to students. This innovative approach enhances the skills teachers already have to prepare students for success in an ever-changing world. By immersing students in practical experiences, we unlock boundless opportunities for their literacy and numeracy skills to thrive.
What Others Have to Say About Us

The Kaiko used the scientific interest generated from the scientists to engage our tamariki in a science focus, incorporating social sciences, maths, reading and writing. This has improved our data. Midyear 2023: 90% of all tamariki are at the expected curriculum level for reading, writing and maths. This has been a particular improvement for our Maori boys.

In 20 years of education this model of professional learning has by far been the most engaging and sustainable model that I have been part of.

PLD with you guys has enabled us to connect to 'place' with hands on authentic learning opportunities that can be used 'now' and 'later'. The real gain of FBS is that you can use the learning throughout the curriculum, so nothing is learned in isolation. It's accessible for students and teachers.

As a result of the PLD, we have seen high quality writing from students from new entrants to year 8, based on their interest and engagement. the hands on authentic experiences have meaning and give them a purpose to want to read and write about their learning. We have been able to incorporate topics covered into maths lessons, for example as part of a geometry session, making rockets out of different shapes.

The PLD provided was engaging and enabled our teachers to see the different ways in which a technology and science rich topic could be broken down and taught meaningfully to our students. Your use of subject-specific sophisticated vocabulary, within both the instructional and practical sections of the workshop, made learning complex words attainable for our students and highlighted to the teachers just how our students love to learn that specialised vocabulary. You demonstrated the use of mathematical concepts, structured literacy and drama within a science and technology unit, and pitched it all at the 'just right' level so that our students could make connections with what they know, and the learning. It has definitely helped our teachers to have a new perspective on how to structure a technology and science unit.
